Chappell days are numbered

After India’s poor performance in the on going ICC Championship Trophy, there are reports that India’s coach Greg Chappell is on his way out after next year’s World Cup in the West Indies. It seems to be a mere binding on the BCCI to have him as coach because of the agreement that they have with him. Since the time he has taken over as John Wright, coach Chappell has made more news for non-cricketing reasons one of them was his conflicts with Ganguly and also showing middle finger to media men after a match.

I never had any personal liking for the guy ever since I came to know about the incident where in he asked his brother to bowl underarm along the ground to batsman Brian McKechnie in a match against the Kiwis long time back. Although it was not illegal to bowl underarm at that time, it was widely accepted that it was tantamount to cheating. McKechnie could do little but block the ball to avoid being dismissed and Australia won the game.

I am no expert on cricket but just to summarise his tenure as of now he has been responsible for hastingly ending the career of Ganguly who should have been given a chance to exit gracefully from the game of cricket.

He has also been not too keen on supporting Zaheer Khan even after he performed exceptionally well in the previous County season, though now he has been called back.

He has tried to manipulate Irfan Khan to such an extent that he seemed to have lost the edge which he showed in first 2-3 seasons that he was being compared to Wasim Akram and now he seems to be a guy next door with no speed, no swing but is expected to become India’s best all rounder.

He and Rahul does not show any faith in abilities of Ramesh Powar may be because of body structure who has consistently bowled better and got more wickets than Harbhajan Singh.

All in all he has tried to bring too many changes to Indian Team which has harmed Indian cricket rather being of any help. Instead of bringing the team together he politicised the bad form of Ganguly to show him the exit gate, he has disintegrated the team.

I know its very easy to analyze sitting in my drawing room and criticize his tactics and strategies as he has failed to produce results, but the thing is that he is being paid to produce better results and get the team improve at different things which they were not good at. He took over the Indian team when they were very well ranked and had achieved success quite consistently under leadership of Ganguly and coach Wright. So, in todays world you get criticized if you don’t produce results as per expectations and thats what he will get if things continue like this.
