Blogging in India: A Survey by Windows Live Spaces

November 28th, 2006 by gaurav | 1 Comment | Filed in , , ,

Blogging has grown worldwide but is also gaining tremendous momentum & becoming a popular means of communication for India’s online community.

“Blogging India: A Windows Live Report”, a report put together by Windows Live Spaces, as part of a pan-Asian research initiative based on an online survey of over 1,000 visitors to the MSN portal from within the country, revealed that India’s so-called nascent blogosphere actually stands out within the region.

Blogging in India - A survey

Some of the survey’s interesting findings:
- For one, the country’s blogosphere is largely driven by youth, and by a passion for self improvement and entertainment. Forty two percent blogs world-wide are read for event updates, and 49 percent for Entertainment.

- Although blogging is on an upswing the blogging community is still largely nascent, with a mere 14 percent of the country’s netizens involved in active blogging while 39 percent just about aware of it.

- “It’s a man’s world” rings true at least in case of the country’s blogosphere, which has to its credit 76 percent male bloggers, and 24 percent female bloggers.

- Not surprising, young adults are fueling the blogging revolution with 54 percent bloggers aged between 25 and 34 years; 32 percent under 25 years; and 15 percent over 35 years of age.

- The key driver for blogging remains a passion for self improvement and personal development, with a large majority of online users reading blogs to stay on top of world events and subjects like Technology and Education.

- Business leaders are leading the way here too, with half the country’s online population preferring to read blogs written by these distinguished gentlemen. Politicians are there on the list of popularity charts as well.

- The survey indicates that blogging could well become the new ‘fourth estate’ with nearly half the respondents putting as much faith in blog content as much as traditional media.

- An important motivator for blogging remains the need to share lives with family and friends. Meanwhile, 58 percent of blogs are started to express passionate views, while the remaining 40 percent are started to entertain others through writing.

- The survey shines the light on the flip side of blogging as well, what with readers admitting to being put off by things like badly written entries, self centred blogs, lack of regular updates, etc.

- Morever, with 90 percent bloggers spending up to 5 hours a week reading blogs or updating them, the survey hints that the Internet could soon become an inseparable part of the advertiser’s marketing mix.

Ping Google Blog Search with Wordpress

November 27th, 2006 by gaurav | 3 Comments | Filed in , , , ,

Google has announced the Google Blog Search Pinging Service. If you want to make sure your latest posts appear in Google’s Blog Search then, like other services including Technorati or Weblogs.com, you will want to ping them when you update. This can be done in two ways:

Manual Ping
If you’re not technically minded and want the simplest method of pinging Google, simply go to http://blogsearch.google.com/ping and enter your blog’s URL everytime it updates.

Automatic Ping
If you want to let Wordpress deal with your pings for you everytime you update then do the following: in your Wordpress admin area, go to “options” then “writing”. At the bottom of the page you should find the Update Services section. By default this should have rpc.pingomatic.com in the text box. This is fine, as Pingomatic pings a number of services for you. It doesn’t cover Google Blog Search directly though. To add this you need to add http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2 to the Update Services box, on a new line.

Reply for Hutch Care

This is in reference to one of my earlier posts - A mail to Hutch Feedback. I was pleasantly surprised to have a such a prompt response to my mail in just a few hours time. I feel little satisfied that they care about their customers in at least getting back to them in time but ultimate satisfaction would be when they could really look into the issue and get something going from their end to really resolve the issue.

I don’t really know why I go to such an extent of writing to Customer care of different companies whenever I face any minor issue with their services, when lot of other people ignore those things. I guess I might attribute this to a quote I read quite sometime back, “If You Don’t Ask, You Don’t Get”.

See one of my earlier post -> Poor Customer service in India has become a norm

SRK again in shoes of BigB

Shah Rukh in, Big B out of KBC

No matter what the media or people say but I really like the “Never-Say-Die” Attitude of Shah Rukh Khan who will be seen in a new role - being host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, since Amitabh Bachchan withdrew from the series earlier. There has been a constant comparision drawn between the two biggest celebrities of the bollywood. He is still trying to put on the shoes that AB has put on for so long, SRK might not have been as good as a Don that Big B portrayed in 1970s, he is the one who has come closest to being compared to him and achieving the heights SRK has reached.

SRK has quoted as :

I was pleasantly surprised when STAR offered me the show. I was a participant in season one of KBC… and little did I know one day I would be hosting it.

“It is a huge act to follow, that of Mr Bachchan… but it also excites me that I am getting an opportunity to reach out (and) talk and interact with my audience through a medium where I began my career as an actor years ago.

Its good that KBC is back as a show, it will give few people a chance to win more crores and lot more to lose in their endeavour to be on show. SRK is poised to add crores to his account as there have been reports that he is getting paid 75 lacs per show whereas Big B was on the show at 50 lacs per show. Thats quite a hefty amount difference that STAR have to shell out for getting in SRK.
