Bye Bye Pluto

IAU stripped Pluto of its planetary statusWhen I was a kid, I was fascinated by 9 planets and always loved to read about planets, galaxies, etc. I remember we were taught a simple way to learn the name of the planets in sequential way which was quite an interesting way. The way to learn was to learn a simple and easy to remember line - which was something like this - My Very Educated Mother Just Show Us Nine Planets and each of the first characters of this line represented first alphabet of the planet which in short was MVEMJSUNP. And the planets : Mercury ; Venus ; Earth ; Mars ; Jupiter ; Saturn; Uranus ; Neptune ; Pluto.

Just wonder what the kids in coming years will do to learn the sequence as the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of its planetary status yesterday. The decision came after years of public debate and over three quarters of a century after astronomers first indentified the ninth planet.

I just loved the way Choco Sea has bid farewell to Pluto

Pluto has been removed from 9 major planets in solar system. I feel a bit sad for that.

Pluto was my favorite planet. It is the far most one. It is small, very small, even smaller than the moon. And it is not that powerful.

All of these are the reasons for me to love Pluto.

About Book
Technology professionals worldwide are getting caught in a tsunami of massive commoditization. Technologies are changing very fast. What seemed hot today is not hot anymore. There is a constant pressure to give more, be more effective, be more efficient and be more productive. This forces most technology professionals to go after short term skills. Of course, going after short term skills will provide short term results but will hurt them in the long run. Competency in technical skills is necessary to succeed in this world but they are not sufficient to thrive. The question is what can one do differently so that he or she can distinguish and move above the commodity crowd.

Problem -> Punishment -> Big Problem ; Problem -> Tackle -> No Problem

Naveen Lakur has shared an experience of his friend. His friend’s company faced a problem that many people were coming late to work. So, the management came up with an idea those coming late to work will have to drop $0.50 in a small piggy-bank which will be kept at the reception. The idea was to make people who come late feel guilty and solve the problem and also at the end of the day use the collected amount for some cause.

Few months later that it was analysed that even those people who use to be on-time earlier started coming late. They were pretty please with the idea of dropping $0.50 into the box, if they were late. They were buying out their guilt by dropping in money in the box. Overall, the problem only became bigger…

Why did the idea hit-back?
Punishment is not always the best solution to the problem. We must look at intelligent ways to drive home the point, which should inspire and induce people to become part of the solution itself.

What did the management do later to tackle the issue ?
1. Withdrawal of the $0.50 penalty for late-coming
2. Educating employees about their responsibility and also about the high productivity in the morning times.
3. Company sponsored breakfast served before office hours (morning 8:30AM to 9:00AM). Incentive for beating the morning traffic congestion.

We must learn from this experience that one cannot make people act forcefully by punishing / bullying them. People are to be treated with care, they are sensitive and responsible, to get the best out of them they must be inspired, made to understand what is expected out of them & trusted with responsibility.
